Three IV drugs used in veterinary as well as human practice were recalled this week, when floating particulate matter was discovered to have contaminated the IV bags.
The drugs are the antibiotics metronidazole (generic for Flagyl) and ciprofloxacin (generic for Cipro), and a drug given for nausea and vomiting, ondansetron (generic for Zofran). They were manufactured by India's Claris Lifesciences and sold in the United States under an exclusive licensing agreement with Pfizer. (Note: Pfizer sponsors the Pet Connection article archive on this site.)
Only the IV formulations of these drugs are being recalled; it does not affect the pill forms. If your pet is hospitalized, having surgery, or receiving IV medication, be sure to discuss this recall with your veterinarian.
The FDA recall notice is here, and Pfizer's more comprehensive recall announcement is here (PDF).
