For those who think there's something wrong with shelter pets, the Ad Council's Shelter Pet Project has just one thing to say: Fugget about it.
Shelter pets are great pets, they say... and they're saying it with a three year, multi-million dollar, multi-media ad campaign. And one part of that campaign, an animated comic called "Moving/Not Their Fault," is in the running for an award at the Hugos, recognizing terrific commercials.
It's part of the Chicago International Film Festival, and it's an "Audience Choice" award, which means you can vote and put the Shelter Pet Project over the top. Just visit the Hugo Awards web site before Sunday at midnight Central Time and select "Moving/Not Their Fault." Then tell 4,567,987 of your closest friends to do the same!
If you haven't seen it, it's here:
Disclaimer: I do the social media for the Shelter Pet Project. But I'm also a true believer!
They do it to minimize ballot-box stuffing. :(

Why on EARTH do they need all that personal information to vote? Sorry, no.

Shelter pets rule! I am currently owned by an ASPCA alumnus, adopted as an adult cat (plus an informal rescue cat), and have been owned by cats from shelters whom I raised from kittenhood and who lived into their mid/late teens (one 16+ and one 18+). I'll take a shelter pet over a kitten/puppy-mill pet any day!!!!!

I *love* the logo of the pawprint-in-handprint!

No fair. I'm not in the U.S. so I had to make up a state and zip code to enter because the ballot doesn't allow for non-US voters. *makes loud raspberry noise*

I'm rather upset. Rummaging through the Shelter Pet Project site shows that H$U$ is involved.

Popularizing the image of shelter pets as good pets is a Good Thing, regardless of whether or not HSUS is involved.
And when a group does both good and bad things, I like to encourage the good things.

I find it ironic that someone who types a dollar sign in HSUS instead of an "S" would object to a campaign that is costing HSUS millions of dollars in sponsorship and doesn't even HAVE a fundraising component.
If this isn't an okay thing for HSUS to do with their money and their sophisticated fundraising machine, what on earth is?

Christie,
Is there any sense in how the shelter pet campaign is doing so far?
I've seen one of the TV commercials -- the one with "Randy" leaving his dog on the country road -- just twice, both on the same station.
Or is it too soon to try and measure results?

It's too soon, but we should start having some data in a few months!
