Noah's Arc

I wrote an article about the Logo series Noah's Arc over on AfterElton.com....

The passion of the fan base, while undeniably an asset, might turn out to be a mixed blessing for Logo. For fans for whom this show carries the burden of being the first and only time they've seen themselves on TV, its loss is particularly bitter and fuels mistrust of Logo's motives. Cannick explained: "This network came out of nowhere, and they used Noah's Arc to launch itself. And they try to deny it, and they hate when people say it, but the fact is for African-American gays and lesbians, that's the only reason why we watch Logo."

No, no, I am not dead. My life force is all being sucked out of me by Chat Week, but I'm holding on to enough to keep my bodily functions, er, functioning. Yeah.

(Telephone rings while I'm working. I'm very crabby, but I look at the caller ID in case it's important. It's my mom. I grudgingly answer.)

Me:  Hi

Mom: You sound tired.

Me: I'm very tired.

Mom: Do you have anything for dinner?

Me (thinking maybe my mommy wanted to cook for me):  No.

Mom: You should call Waiters on Wheels.

Me: What huh?

Mom: They go to restaurants and get your order for you. You should call them.

Me: I'll look online. Thanks!

(End phone call.)

So I looked. It's real. Waiters on Wheels. They are bringing my dinner now.

GOD I LOVE SAN FRANCISCO.

Yes, it's time for shameless hype again

Beagle inspires donation to UC Davis dialysis unit

From the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital:

Genny, who was the family beagle of Jeffrey Rich and Jan Miller Rich of Dallas, Texas, is leaving a legacy of love and hope for other animals needing hemodialysis services. The Millers have contributed $50,000 and, with other friends of the school, are planning for renovation and expansion of the Hemodialysis Unit at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH).

Greatest invention ever

I have found the perfect program for turning digital interviews into text documents.

It's called the human brain.

I paid someone to transcribe a bunch of interviews for me. OMG it's bliss. Bliss, I tell you. I would never have done this if I weren't so freaking overwhelmed with work right now (bitch bitch bitch), but I may now become, you know, an addict.

I always knew I needed a secretary. It's not that I'm disorganized, it's that I'm UNDERSTAFFED.

The big cheese is away

Gina's on an airplane, winging her way to Global Pet Expo, and she left me in charge of the blog. So I thought I'd regale you with adorable stories of my own pets reviews of a couple of absolutely classic sighthound books.



Gazehounds: The Search for Truth by Constance O. Miller. This classic book is based on a series of articles the author wrote for Gazehound Magazine from 1976 to 1980. Don't let the dates fool you, though; it is as vital and interesting today as it was when she first penned it.The origin of Gazehounds: The Search for Truth was Constance Miller's diatribe against what she perceived as lies, myths, and distortions about the origins of the sighthound breeds. While debunking myths may have been Miller's original goal, she ended up creating a fascinating history of sighthounds, liberally illustrated with photographs and illustrations. She discusses the revival of the Irish Wolfhound, the state of the modern Saluki, the history and creation of the Whippet, and how the Deerhound and Borzoi became show dogs. Her chapter on the Afghan hound, and its divergence from the Saluki, evokes an era of dog showing and breeding that few of us today can imagine.



Gazehounds & Coursing: The History, Art and Sport of Hunting With Sighthounds by M H Dutch Salmon. This is the best book about what sighthounds are all about that has ever been written. No matter how you feel about hunting, if you own a deerhound or other sighthound, read this book for the understanding it will give you of what your dog is all about.



Dutch Salmon is held in high esteem as a dog man, and my own contribution to that respect will be just a drop in the bucket, but I have to add that I couldn't help but revere a guy who writes, as he does, about my breed, "I like the Scottish Deerhound best of all the gazehounds. They are a fine pet; the ideal companion dog - quiet, but alert, devoted and loving but not sloppy about it. Courageous but not overly aggressive, either with people or other dogs; dignified but not snobbish. The deerhound is definitely not temperamental. This beautiful hound has a look in his eyes you won't forget; a distant look, until he knows you."



Now THAT'S an expert.

Let's do a little reality check about who our house cats really are: clever little predators who evolved to spend most of their time leaping, pouncing and slinking after prey. They hunt and eat more than a dozen times a day, mostly during the nighttime hours. They sleep in the daytime.

Their natural diet is high in protein and fat and devoid of carbohydrates. They drink little or no water, getting all their moisture from their food. They scratch at trees and other vertical surfaces to keep their claws in shape. They are lean and muscular and have sleek, short coats.

That's what cats really are, but we rarely take that into account when we keep them as pets.
