Say "pet poisoning" to most people, and they immediately think of dangerous plants and chemicals such as insecticides. But the number one risk to your pet dog or cat is your own medications.
Number two is indeed insecticides, but number three is again drugs - in this case, veterinary drugs such as pain medication and even nutritional supplements.
The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center released its list of the top ten household dangers to pets, based on over 116,000 calls to its animal poison control hotline in 2006.
“While the reason is not clear, calls in virtually each of these categories seems to be on the rise,” said Dr. Steven Hansen, veterinary toxicologist and senior vice president with the ASPCA, who manages the ASPCA’s Midwest Office, which houses the APCC. As National Poison Prevention Week approaches (March 18-24), the ASPCA advises pet parents to stay alert to the possibility of poisoning from these common household items.
See the complete list, and more information, here.

“While the reason is not clear, calls in virtually each of these categories seems to be on the rise,” My guess is that calls are on the rise because people are just better informed today than they were in the past, which is a good thing, actually, a GREAT thing!
